Beaked Hill Dragon Bust by AntWatkins Beaked Hill Dragon Bust by AntWatkins
He's all finished! I will make a short base for him I think, I am getting ready to cut him up for molds.

He is just under 5" tall without base.
Made with Monster Clay!

Thank you! In order to make molds, I would need to cut it into a few pieces for the full sculpture to be molded properly. But yes, you want to make sure you cut it apart in the right places :)

Ah, yes, I understand. And then if you ever needed this adorable thing for anything else, you could cast it using the mold and it would be much easier ;) I gotchca.

So, if you're molding this guy does that mean you'll be casting copies for sale?

Awesome! I may have to acquire one ;D About how much do you suppose they'll cost?

Not sure quite yet, these (along with the other busts I am about to start molding) will be the first time I mold my own stuff. I am trying to keep the cost down, which is why I am doing it myself instead of sending it to the molder/caster. I'll let you know when I can, if you'd like.

Definitely let me know when you can. Good luck with the molding process--I have yet to successfully mold something myself (all I can say is, don't buy cheap silicone, it's not worth it!)

Where do you run into the probs with molding? Making the mold itself?

I think my biggest issue was with the silicone I got; it refused to cure, and I tried several times, accounting for temperature, humidity, exact mix ratio, etc. It was cheap "mystery silicone", so for the next attempt I'm going to buy something name brand. Probably Dragon Skin, I've heard a lot of good things about it.

You bet bud!If you don't mind me asking what solvent have you found works best for smoothing monster clay?

:iconantwatkins:

Yeah the thing I found works best is a 50/50 mix of 99% alchohol and isopropyl myristate. The alchohol dulls it down a little, if you just use the Iso M it will kind of melt the clay down, making it VERY soft. It will dull down the details if overused...use it sparingly!
