Demon Dragon WIP shot by AntWatkins Demon Dragon WIP shot by AntWatkins
I thought I would put up a WIP picture of one of the sculpts I am working on right now (this is the same sculpt that I am working on in my DevId pic)...at this point I have one wing finished, working on the other. The wings will be folded on the finished piece, I will rough out the wings in clay, finish texture on the inside of the membrane, then fold them to finish the texture. I am working on the tail and right hand seperately at this point as well. More to come soon :)

Something about seeing how you do the armature for this is as impressive as what is already completed on the piece itself. Actually, while this is a WIP, it's pretty helpful and informative regarding this whole process.

It's one thing to see the finished piece, but getting to see the process behind it adds a whole lot more.

Hey James, this is super sculpey on this one. I have the monster clay but have not worked on anything enough to take pics of yet. I like the way that monster clay is feeling so far, we'll see how it goes when I get into it more...

Yeah, lamp works great, some quick time in the over works if ya need it to be like taffy. I have not actually sculpted anything solid and with character yet, but plan to VERY soon

Judging by those poking-out wires, looks like there's going to be some interesting stuff going on with the wings. Looking forward to seeing this guy finished!

I start on wire mesh, sometimes it may crack a little bit, but nothing that I cannot fix. My wings are usually thin enough that I can use a heat gun to bake them if I need to.

what is the netting for the wings ?
Do you ever make a sculpture that you actually mold?
Or do you just make unique pieces out of sculptey ?

I used metal mesh for the wings, you can buy it at craft stores and also hardware stores.

I do both. Sometimes I sculpt out ideas that I like, sometimes I sketch other stuff out in clay, and sometimes I have had pieces molded. I don't do the molding though, someone else molds it. I don't know if I will have this one molded, but there is a possibility.
